Recent research shows that a woman’s gut behaves differently than men’s because of sex-related features in the brain.

Dr. Tanja Babic, a researcher at Penn State College of Medicine, found that in women, the nerve cells that control the movement of food through the intestines are slower and more sluggish than those in men.

She found that the nerves in female rats received more signals that suppress the intestinal movement of food. The nerves were also less responsive when stimulated.
